Lagos State Government Reassures Ogun River Bank Residents… Says Residual Water On Coastline Will Recede Soon

The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab on Friday allayed the fears of residents along the Ogun-Osun river bank following reports of flooding experienced in the areas with the assurance of the preparedness of the State to contain any eventuality that may arise with the intensity of the flow of the run-off water from upland into Lagos.

Wahab, who made the remark while fielding questions from newsmen during a press briefing on the recent flooding situation along the basin of the Ogun River and lagoon coastline held at the Conference Room of the Ministry, said it has become important that homeowners within these areas relocate immediately to higher grounds.

The Commissioner sympathized with the affected residents and reassured them that the government is committed to managing the flooding situation to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

He stated that from the statistics issued by the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, the total amount of rainfall recorded from January to October 15 of 2023 indicates that most of the expected rainfall in the area has fallen; Likewise, the volume of water released from January to October 15, 2023, is more than the average synthesized Annual Flow Volume of 1770 Mcm against a Gross Storage of 2,274.0Mcm.

The Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has sanctioned the appointment of 16 Local Government Area Development Officers (LGA-DOs).

The newly appointed LGA-DOs and their respective local government areas are as follows: Adisa Jimoh Olarewaju (Asa); Asaburu Umar Mora (Baruten); Mohammed Haruna Likpata (Edu); Ajiboye Yemisi (Ekiti); Ayanshola Benjamin (Ifelodun); Ajao Omotayo Garba (Ilorin East); Yisa Abdulrauf Ayodeji (Ilorin South); Abdullahi Abdulfatai Ajia (Ilorin West); Awodiji Omotayo Felix (Irepodun); Dr (Mrs) Sarah Oloyede (Isin); Salihu Sadiq Yakub (Kaiama); Sulu Emiola Agnes (Moro); Abass Zanjan Damilola (Offa); Taye Babalola (Oke Ero); Oladipo Ayobami Adeoye (Oyun); and Fatimah Asabe Jiyah (Patigi).

These appointments, effective immediately, were disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

In the wake of a destructive rainstorm that struck Otta and its environs on Sunday, April 21, 2024, His Majesty, Kabiyesi Olota, Oba Professor Adeyemi Abdukabir Obalanlege, has demonstrated exemplary leadership by conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas.

Residents of Sango Otta awoke to a scene of chaos and distress as fallen power poles littered the roads, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, the Olota wasted no time in mobilizing efforts to provide support and relief to the affected communities.

In a statement released by Afin Olota Ile Awori and signed by the Olota’s personal assistant, Prince Adeyemi Sulaimon Olusesi, His Majesty expressed deep concern over the plight of those whose properties and livelihoods were impacted by the storm.

Describing the situation as “worrisome and sad,” particularly in light of the prevailing economic challenges facing the nation, the Olota extended his heartfelt sympathies to all affected individuals and families.

Furthermore, the Olota urged the government to take immediate action to address the aftermath of the storm and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Emphasizing the importance of swift intervention, His Majesty called upon relevant authorities to prioritize the restoration of essential services and infrastructure in the affected areas.

Acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, notably the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), and other stakeholders who promptly responded to the crisis, the Olota expressed gratitude for their commitment to assisting the affected communities.

The referred monarch also offered prayers for divine intervention, invoking the mercy of Eledumare for those directly and indirectly impacted by the disaster.

Yobe Governor Seeks Harmonious Military-Civilian Relationship

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has called for a more harmonious military/civilian relationship in Gashua to promote peace in the area.

Governor Buni gave the piece of advice following a misunderstanding between the two parties on Sunday.

He described as unfortunate that such incident happened at a time when the state was enjoying relative peace.

A press statement signed the director-general (DG) of press and media affairs to the governor, Mamman Mohammed, which was made available to journalists in Damaturu, after the protests by youths, Buni said, “It is sad and regrettable that lives are lost in an avoidable circumstance.”

Buni observed with dismay the recurring incidence in Gashua, saying the state government would meet with the military authorities to bring a permanent solution to such threats to the relationship.

According to him, “We should always be united to fight our common enemy and not to be adversaries against ourselves.”

He also noted that the military and the residents have responsibilities to one another to achieve collective success.
