Security personnel besieged the PDP secretariat in Akure early on Monday in anticipation of the protest.

On Monday morning, the PDP secretariat’s entrance was guarded by armed security personnel, comprising police officers and Department of State Services agents.

It was learned that PDP secretariat employees were unable to access their offices as a result of the circumstances and had to wait outside for several hours.

Eventually, permission was granted for the PDP youths to stage the demonstration on the secretariat grounds.

Speaking, Mr. Akintayo Oluyi, a young leader for the PDP, stated: “There is no denying that Ondo State has experienced a leadership vacuum over the past nine months. The state’s populace became uneasy at some point in April, which is how we ended up with an acting governor.

“We also knew what happened while Aiyedatiwa was representing him. Since it’s an internal problem, that isn’t even our problem. However, the governor has not been in the state since his arrival 32 days ago following a three-month medical leave in Germany.

However, there have been rumors that Akeredolu has passed bills into law through proxies, which is what prompted the state’s PDP youth wing to stage a protest. This is not how we can carry on any longer. We represent the collective voice of the masses and the will of the people.

We are demanding that Mr. Governor returns to his duties; he can no longer rule us through a proxy and that we stop hearing claims about him even if we haven’t seen him. We are aware of our governor; if he were really fit, we would have seen him walking about Akure.

“We are giving Mr. Governor three days’ notice to return to the state, and we are giving him the next 24 hours to address the people of Ondo State,” stated the PDP’s youth wing. The APC has been telling us in a number of their comments that the governor will be joining us soon.

We are offering him three days to address us, and if he doesn’t, the opposition party will take over Akure’s streets and won’t stop pressing for him to step down or resume his duties.

According to Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer, the police officers were stationed at the PDP secretariat to maintain peace and order.

“On Friday, we received a letter indicating that some people wanted to protest,” stated Odunlami. “The letter did not have a letterhead or specifics about who wanted to protest, so we felt that it would be best to mobilize our men to uphold law and order in the event of an emergency for the safety of the party involved.”

However, the Ondo Masses Solidarity Movement said that Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the deputy governor of Ondo State, was responsible for the PDP youths’ planned protest.

The group claimed that Aiyedatiwa had been contacting opposition parties and young people to hold the street in Akure and stage a protest against the governor in a statement released by its coordinator, Chief Ogunyemi Jeremiah.

According to reliable sources, the deputy governor initiated the protest and had already provided funding for a few young people to participate, according to the statement. The young people got together at a hotel in Alagabaka, Akure, and shared money.

“One of the schemes, which the security agencies thwarted, was for the demonstrators to burn a tanker laden with gasoline within the state capital. They also intended to demolish the complex housing the House of Assembly.

The interests of the majority never supported the planned protest. Because the state regularly pays salaries and leave incentives, the general public is both receiving palliative care and benefiting from booming sales.

Aiyedatiwa’s phone line was unreachable, and at the time this report was filed, he had not responded to a text message, therefore attempts to gain a response from him were futile.

RCGG, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by its conveners, Mr Soala Jumbo and Mr Inyefi Wobo, said it was deeply concerned over the political crisis in the state.

The group called on Tinubu to call for a new peace accord anchored on the Constitution that would guarantee stability and allow the state governor to focus on governance without distractions.

It stated that the crisis plunged into turmoil following the defection of 27 members of the State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement said the clear provisions of the Nigerian Constitution stipulates that such defections result in the loss of the seats of the lawmakers as members of the House of Assembly.

RCGG stated that the defected lawmakers had continued to challenge the authority of the duly elected governor of the state.

The group said it recognises and respects the historical significance of Wike as the immediate past governor and now minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“We appreciated the President for the earlier Presidential accord which was done as an emergency measure but now need a constitutional peace accord that will bring peace and allow the governor to deliver good governance to the people,” the group said.

The group advised that the new peace accord should at least give way for the declaration of the seats of the defecting members as vacant and the holding of elections to fill those seats.

The coalition argued that the political interest of the FCT minister could be protected by other forms of guarantees or compromises that do not affect governance in the state.

The State APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris, announced the suspension at a press briefing in Gusau on Friday.

Jaji represents the Kaura-Namoda/Birnin-Magaji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the APC.

Idris said other allegations against Jaji include the engagement in dishonest practices and habitual absenteeism from the party’s meetings and other activities.

He said the sanction was sequel to the notice of confirmation of suspension of Aminu Jaji from the Birnin-Magaji ward APC executives over the alleged anti-party activities, among other irregularities.

Idris said, “The suspension notice was forwarded to the state APC headquarters by the APC executive committee of Birnin Magaji Local Government.

“The state executive committee of the APC held an emergency meeting at the State Party Secretariat, Gusau today, Friday 17th May 2024, where Jaji’s suspension matter was tabled to the state executive members.

“The state APC executive committee resolved and approved the suspension of Aminu Jaji from the party.

”This is based on the recommendations of the State disciplinary committee in line with his earlier suspension by the APC Birnin Magaji Ward Executive Committee and affirmed by APC Birnin Magaji LG Executive Committee.”

Reacting to his suspension, Aminu Jaji told NAN in a telephone interview that all the allegations against him were baseless and untrue.

Aminu Jaji said the state APC leadership has not followed the constitutional provisions of the party.

He said, “This is a clear indication that the party in the state has no focus and leadership.”
