The governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, increased the target population for palliatives from 300,000 to 400,000 households.

Six family members will make up each household, therefore multiplying that number by 400,000 results in a new aim of 2.4 million people for Zulum.

On August 1, 2023, Governor Zulum established a target of 300,000 families with six people in each, which equates to 1.8 million people, as he began a new phase of palliatives distribution.

The presidency had not yet declared its intervention of N5 billion to each of the states of the federation when Zulum set the aim.

The governor stated that he was increasing his initial aim by an extra 100,000 families, which will total to 600,000 people, in light of the recent announcement of N5 billion in intervention to states.

“Today we are here to distribute palliative to 100,000 vulnerable households under the Presidential Initiative, this is in addition to the 300,000 households the Borno State government had rolled out early this month,” Zulum said to reporters at the location of the distribution exercise, the former Bakassi IDPs’ Camp.

You may recall that the federal government announced N5 billion to be distributed to all states, and with that sum, we hope to reach an extra 100,000 disadvantaged households, he stated.

The governor claimed that the federal, state, and municipal administrations worked together on the presidential proposal.

While the state and local governments would reimburse 48% of the total, the federal government would grant 52% of the total.

In order to lessen the impact of growing fuel prices on the lives of its inhabitants, Zulum has accelerated palliatives since July.

To date, thousands of families received palliatives from the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Gwoza, Kukawa, and Jere Metropolitan Councils. On Monday, Umar Usman Kadafur, the state’s deputy governor, signaled the start of a similar distribution in Biu town.

Additionally, Governor Zulum thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his timely assistance to state governments.

Zulum pointed out that the policies and programs of President Tinubu will be advantageous to Nigerians in the long run.
