Oyo State Governor Flags-Off First Phase of Palliative Distributions

Published

The first round of the delivery of palliative care packages to Oyo State’s impoverished and vulnerable citizens has been set off by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Seven different locations around the state’s zones started the distribution at the same time.

The effort is part of the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery, SAfER package and is intended to mitigate the effects of the elimination of gasoline subsidies on 200,000 households and one million families in the state.

After receiving 3,000 sacks of rice from the Nigerian government, Governor Makinde indicated that the state decided to postpone the distribution because it anticipated that the amount would not be sufficient to feed the one million families through the targeted 200,000 houses.

“Each person would likely receive a cup of rice if we distributed the 3,000 bags we received from the Nigerian government to 200,000 households. They would still be the first to rush to social media to post videos demonstrating how little the package is if we had hurried out to appease the doubters. We took our time to plan because we are concerned about ensuring our economy both now and in the future, he said.
The governor pointed out that the state government waited until it had an extra 37,000 bags totaling 40,000 bags of rice to be distributed in order to support the endeavor.

He claimed that in addition, the government was required to buy sacks of beans, cassava flour, and vegetable oil from locals across the zones of the state so as to deliver a truly SAfER package.

“We know that everyone is impacted by our current economic realities, which is why other SAfER program components took into account other segments of society,” he stated. Not just any acts, but sustainable ones are what we believe in. The reason we talk about Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) when everyone else is talking about palliative care is because of this.

His administration, he claimed, does not want to treat the symptoms but rather attack the root, and that sustainable action requires proper planning and strategy. He further explained that Oyo State was delivering the SAfER package and not palliatives because the dictionary definition of palliative was to treat the symptoms and leave the main cause.

Makinde claimed that his government did not hurriedly start distributing the palliatives because it was necessary to carefully plan and take action that would safeguard the state economy, perhaps in response to claims that he had diverted the cash intended for the palliatives.

“Some people have been asking about the whereabouts of the 3,000 bags of rice that the Federal Government gave to Oyo State on radio and social media,” he stated. Others claim that we embezzled the N5 billion the federal government handed us. Some claim that there is a lack of trust between the populace and the government. Is Oyo State the same? Don’t you adore this government?

“This administration won’t mislead you; we’ll tell you the truth about how things are. We were one of the first states to admit receiving 3,000 bags of rice from the federal government. We intended to send this food relief package to 200,000 households, as I stated in my newsletter from August 10th, the governor claimed.

While Governor Makinde was launching the distribution in Oyo Town, his deputy, Bayo Lawal, was doing likewise in the Saki region of the state; meanwhile, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, the SSG’s Secretary, was in Iseyin, and Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, the chief of staff, was in Ogbomoso.

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin (Ibarapa); the Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Fadeyi (Ona Ara); and the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun (Ibadan North West), all simultaneously flagged off the same exercise.

He said the current administration in the state is gradually losing touch with the people.

Odeyemi in a release issued on behalf of the group in Osogbo, the state capital, said the coming together of the parties had become imperative to salvage the state from the “poor performance” of Governor Adeleke.

He said the Adeleke administration is falling short of peoples expectation, adding that going to two years in office, the governor has not completed any tangible project.

The release read in part, “It will be recalled that while seeking votes, Senator Ademola Adeleke, said his family had dollar and pound sterling in large volume. I remembered we warned Osun people then to be wary of the deceit but they didn’t listen.

“Now, the reality is dawned on everybody. Mr Governor prepared for the office of governor, without any proper knowledge of Osun governance intricacies, particularities.

“Now, it has become imperative for us, like-minded political parties in the state, to rise to the occasion and save the state from more agony. Talks are progressing well and the political parties involved are showing commitment to the project.

“They are all ready to work together to unseat Adeleke, come 2026. Osun should expect a strong coalition that would work together and end the PDP administration in 2026.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, Engr. Rabiu Kwankwaso of orchestrating a campaign to undermine the political stature of the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje ahead of the 2027 elections.

National Legal Adviser of the APC, Abdulkareem Kana, made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today where he blamed the NNPP leadership in Kano State of masterminding protests targeted at removing Ganduje from his position.

Kana maintained that the NNPP’s efforts would be unsuccessful in their goal to destabilize the APC, asserting, “These actions are aimed at scratching our surface, but they lack the capability to destabilise us.”

Kana defended Ganduje’s track record, stating, “I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Ganduje, and I’ve witnessed his dedication and inclusive leadership. He’s a seasoned administrator, and his contributions to our party are invaluable.”

In response, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, dismissed the allegations, characterizing the APC as a “confused party led by a delusional leader.”

Johnson stated that Kwankwaso has no involvement in Ganduje’s internal party issues, arguing that the APC chairman’s difficulties are of his own making and not due to any external interference.

Johnson remarked, “Ganduje’s troubles stem from his own actions, not any external interference. He’s currently embroiled in conflicts with his ward’s party executives and lacks the courage to face the charges against him in court.”
