There Is No Plan To Increase Company Taxes – FIRS Chair Says

Published

on

Corporate organizations were concerned that the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS) intention to raise the nation’s tax-to-GDP ratio from 10.86 percent to 18 percent would result in higher levies. However, acting FIRS chairman Zacch Adedeji has allayed those concerns.

According to Adedeji, this determination won’t necessarily result in more taxes or the introduction of new levies because the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to fostering an atmosphere that is conducive to corporate success.

The chairman of FIRS had promised that the organization would surpass Africa’s average tax-to-GDP ratio of 16.5% in three years under his direction, all without hindering investment or economic progress.

Corporate entities had suppressed concerns over the proposal, believing that it would result in higher tax rates or the introduction of new ones.

During a gathering on Wednesday at Four Points by Sheraton in Lagos, Adedeji addressed leaders of leading significant tax-paying companies and stated, “Our belief, understanding, and vision as a revenue-generating agency is not to introduce any new tax as we only want to use data to improve compliance.”

The chairman of FIRS stated that the invited companies and those who are prepared to fulfill their tax duties willingly have nothing to be scared of, according to a statement released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Dare Adekanmbi.

“We have an easy strategy. We only want to tax wealth, not poverty, in order to increase tax income.

Thus, it is not in our best interests to cut down the fruit-bearing trees. I want to thank you for everything that you have done in this first “love letter.” Thus, you have nothing to be concerned about.

“We won’t pursue collection of unpaid debts. However, we don’t want anyone to avoid paying us what is owed. Our strategy is fair engagement. You may be confident that there won’t be a tax rise in order to meet the 18% tax-to-GDP objective.

“You will have known that part of the committee’s mandate is to reduce the number of taxes if you have been listening to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, who is the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms,” he stated.

He claims that the goal of the interaction with the businesses is to incorporate their suggestions into the strategic action plan that is being developed to solve issues impeding the collection of tax revenue.

He praised the invited enterprises for their strong sense of accountability and exhorted them to keep up their conscientious tax payment.

As one of Nigeria’s top taxpayers, you stand out for your dedication to maintaining strict tax compliance guidelines and good corporate citizenship.

This is exactly in line with our goal of using voluntary compliance to make taxes the focal point of national development. Your individual industries are essential to the nation’s economic and fiscal stability as well as to the government’s capacity to collect large amounts of tax income.

“We are cognizant of the difficulties that Nigerian businesses face in light of the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing economic performance. In order for our country to reach its greatest potential, we must make these difficult but essential decisions, he stated.

The chairman pledged to address the concerns brought up, even as he addressed some of the issues brought up by the company representatives, such as the multiple taxes and redundant tax oversight on corporate entities.

Some of the companies at the event included Nestlé Nigeria Plc, ExxonMobil, Shell, Guinness, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Flour Mills, Dangote Group, MTN, British American Tobacco company, First Bank, Access Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank Plc, KC Gaming Limited (Bet9ja), Airtel, Seplat, BUA Cement, Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas, NNPC Limited and others.
